Unix password hash schemes

Some variants of Unix, notably Linux, support a variety encryption or hash algorithms that may be used on plain text passwords. Although the Microsoft Server for NIS product only supports both MD5 and the Unix “Crypt” algorithm for password hashing. Many Unix systems assume “crypt” when NIS is being employed. Consequently all Unix systems must be configured to use the crypt algorithm in order to participate in the single-sign-on environment.

Where this behaviour is not the default it will be detailed for the specific Unix platform in the section Populating required NIS maps
